The Pivotal Role of the Oncology Nurse in Breakthrough Cancer Pain: Patient Advocacy, Assessment, and Management

The Pivotal Role of the Oncology Nurse in Breakthrough Cancer Pain: Patient Advocacy, Assessment, and Management

Program Overview
We’ve all heard about breakthrough cancer pain (BTCP) – those sudden, uncontrolled, intense flares of pain occurring in addition to otherwise stable persistent pain – which can be debilitating for patients and a challenge to treat. Yet, despite its high prevalence and significant impact on patients, pain assessments continue to be inconsistent in accurately recognizing BTCP. Improving diagnosis of BTCP may result in more optimal pain management.

At the conclusion of this session, attendees will be able to define the characteristics of BTCP, understand the impact of BTCP on the oncology patient, implement better techniques to assess BTCP using tools and communication methods, and advocate for patients with BTCP. In addition, evidence-based information will be presented on a therapeutic option for the management of BTCP.

Program Objectives

  • Enhance the understanding of breakthrough cancer pain (BTCP) and its impact on the oncology patient
  • Affirm the need to include BTCP as an essential component of pain evaluation
  • Provide evidence-based information on a therapeutic option for the management of BTCP
